Methodology

Michael is well-known for his teaching style and teaches methods used by professional artists. He believes in showing students the foundations of both drawing and painting, so that students can take their skills and apply them to any style and medium of their choosing. In oils Michael encourages his students to work "directly" to take advantage of the properties of the paint. In watercolor, his philosophy is simplicity, keeping it fresh and luminous. In both mediums he emphasizes training the eye to see both shape and color, to quickly improve skill level.

Open Studios

"Open Studios" are a place where students can learn the foundation skills through Michael on an on-going basis, as well as apply their skills to their own individuals works with hands-on assistance from him. It is a dynamic environment and he covers everything from, line, value and color, to composition and design as required by the skill levels of the students.

Speaking

Michael is also an engaging speaker on the value of arts in education and life. He has spoken at multiple teaching conferences and continues with the goal to show others the value of the arts as a process that engages the mind in critical thinking.
